In the cave churches
After arriving in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, you will first go to your city hotel, where you can check into your rooms and rest a bit. Today, we will explore the Armenian capital, located in the shadow of the biblical Mount Ararat, one of the oldest cities in the world. Enjoy a pleasant walk through the heart of the city, including Republic Square, the Opera House, and the Cascade. From here, you will have a beautiful view of the entire city. An authentic excursion will take you to Garni, the summer residence of the Armenian kings. The only remaining Hellenistic temple in the Caucasus (1st century) still enchants visitors. A short drive will take you to Geghard, where you will visit the cave monastery located at the end of a gorge, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Armenia. Today, you will visit more than two UNESCO World Heritage sites. To conclude the day, you will have dinner with a private family, where we will see how the Armenian flatbread Lavash is baked! Overnight stay in Yerevan, Hotel Royal Plaza 4* in the heart of Yerevan FA.
On the Biblical Mount Ararat
Today, we explore the Ararat Plain, where Noah is said to have planted the first vine after descending from Mount Ararat. The Ararat Plain plays an important role in the country's viticulture. We will drive to the Chor Virap Monastery, where we can enjoy a magnificent view of Mount Ararat. Next, we head to the Vayots Dzor Province. Viticulture in this region dates back to the 3rd millennium BC. In a cave in the province, wine barrels with traces of wine from that period have been found. The endemic grapevine Areni, used to make the well-known red wine "Areni," grows here. We will visit the Noravank Monastery, located at the end of the beautiful Amaghu Gorge, which is impressive for its unique exterior reliefs and its reddish façade that blends almost seamlessly with its rocky surroundings at sunset. We will visit a farm with a rustic wine cellar. Lunch and a wine tasting of various Armenian house wines will be provided by the farmers, where we will learn more about rural life. Crossing the Selim Pass, we reach the only well-preserved caravanserai in Armenia from the 14th century. We will visit the Sevan Monastery (9th century) on the peninsula, which was once an island and served as an exile site for the Armenian nobility. Overnight stay in Dilidshan at Green Hill Guesthouse.
UNESCO Treasures
In Armenia's richest forest area, with its inaccessible villages, significant monasteries and educational institutions from the Middle Ages are hidden. We will follow the "Monastery Route." The harmonious coordination of the buildings constructed one after another is certainly an architectural masterpiece. Lunch will be at the edge of the beautiful Debed Gorge, where we will be served the best Armenian shashlik. Almost at the end of the world, located on a high plateau with a magnificent view, we find the Haghpat Monastery. We will drive to the Armenian-Georgian border at Sadakhlo and cross the border. Overnight stay in Tbilisi at Hotel Kalasi 3+ in the old town.
Tbilisi – The City of Warm Springs
